I have 27 years experience teaching both in the United States and in Asia. Most of my experience ranges from grade 4 through adult, although I am currently working with younger children. I love to read. Since my daughter was born I've discovered that I love to read aloud to her and especially enjoy creating special voices and dramatic delivery. I've always pointed out how the commas, periods and exclamation points show us how to phrase the sentences. My daughter now 5, has been reading for over a year and is now reading 'chapter' books(nor pictures Dad!) to herself. When I was in the 4th grade I was runner up in the school spelling bee. I knew from childhood I wanted to be a teacher, but never fit into the system very well. As an "outsider", I have tasted the cultural and educational difficulties students can have. My training was in physical chemistry, which required quite a lot of mathematics, which I loved very much, and yet did not excel in. When I first began to read, I really wanted to understand what I was reading and where the story was going. This helped me to learn techniques to improve my own reading comprehension through the years. Even when I was in the third grade, I scored at at least an 8th grade level on standardized tests.
