The study of literature in many ways is the study of literate thinking. What I mean by that is "literature" usually describes works by great thinkers such as Homer, Emerson, or Shakespeare, and many others. We do not typically ascribe "literature" to Michael Crichton, or W.E.B. Griffin because these authors, while potentially great thinkers, write novels primarily designed to entertain and to make money.
