Our grandson had failed first grade last year, but after the summer with Dena's efforts, was reviewed and accepted into second grade two weeks ago, as being age appropriate in math and third grade level in reading. We are extremely appreciative of Dena's patience and talents as a tutor.

"Very Effective French, English, Drama, and Piano Tutor"

I have a 5 and 7 year old niece and nephew that I have babysat and helped learn how to read. I am currently babysitting a 6 year old and a 10 year old and help them with their reading and math practice. I worked as an assistant teacher at a day care for 4 and 5 year olds for one summer and helped them learn. I did 30 hours of my practicum for my teaching license in a first grade classroom and helped students with all of their work; reading, writing, math, and science. ... More

Diane has quickly helped to ease my daughters math anxiety and has helped her believe that she can excel in a subject that has in past years been very difficult. Diane makes sure that my daughter understands the concepts presented and answers her questions without making her feel incompetent or embarrassed. She praises my daughter for the concepts that she does understand and explains things that she does not understand patiently as many times and in as many ways as necessary in order for my daughter to grasp it. We are glad to have found Diane on WyzAnt and with her help look forward to a successful school year.

"Certified math/science teacher, supportive of all students"

Algebra 1 is a major leap for many students. Why do we use variables? What is the point of solving equations? How do we write an equation from a word problem? Mathematics takes on many qualities of a language in Algebra, whereas earlier math courses just involved numbers. Simplifying expressions with lots of variables raised to lots of powers may seem overwhelming at first. Linear equations, slope, direct variation, and functions are major concepts in Algebra 1. Students may encounter simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, parabolas, and inequalities for the first time. For these ... More

Barbara was the best thing that we could have done for our son. When I was looking for a tutor for our third grader, I saw Barbara's profile and knew that she was the right tutor to bring confidence and pride back to his math skills. Barbara came prepared to his first session and worked patiently with him to get through his fractions and help him succeed where he felt he was failing. Our son made an A on his next test and even asks for Barbara to come back and help him get through word problems. Her calm voice and gently demeanor just puts your child at ease where the learning environment is easy and positive. We have a lot to thank Barbara for, our son is happy, excited about math again and most importantly not scared. Thank you doing such a great job!!!!!

"20 Years Experience Teaching English and Writing"

I have twenty years' experience teaching English in every environment and with every kind of student imaginable. I have taught in a village school in Jamaica, UNC-Asheville, North Buncombe High School, the Juvenile Evaluation Center and at Christ School, a preparatory boarding school in Asheville. My teaching style is experiential as I believe every student has the capacity to connect with literature and to write very well, and I enjoy showing a student how he or she does this naturally. I be... ... More
