Izumi is an excellent tutor. She takes care to develop a system based on your level of Japanese and personal goals, and always pays careful attention to your inputs. When I mentioned that I'd like to incorporate more practical conversational situations, she listened and immediately implemented daily life dialogue practice. She is organized and works hard to prepare for each lesson, creating a lesson plan and developing exercises that effectively complement textbook materials. Her systematic approach helped to encourage me to rise to the challenge and study hard. She asks insightful questions from the readings to help further your thought processes in the language, and takes care to point out changes in speech styles and situations when formal language is needed (important in Japanese). She writes detailed lesson reviews of each lesson to help remind you of assignment or areas for improvement. She is also kind and personable! Overall, a definite 5-star tutor—if you work with her and put in some work on your own, you will definitely improve your Japanese language ability!
I really liked Bonnie's classes. She reviewed a lot of grammar with me but, mostly, she focused on pronunciation, as that was my main interest. She gave me many exercises, and really stressed the spots I have more difficulty with. One simple thing I really liked was how she always tried to engage in conversation, taking notes while we chatted about various things, so at the end she could point out the things I've said wrong or could improve. She is very friendly and organized and I found her didactics to be great. Bonus for the small bits of America/New-York history she gave every now and then, especially, related to English language.
My 2nd grader attends a magnet school and was struggling to keep up with Math in the short amount of time allocated in the school day. We initially saw Mary Ellen to primarily help with Math and handwriting skills. The handwriting skills improved almost immediately, and Mary Ellen worked very hard with my daughters math teacher to find out where we needed to work. Her math teacher even commented to me that she has never worked with such a thorough tutor. She also worked with her on general study skills which is an ongoing battle for many parents and children. I feel my daughter is now able to apply some of these disciplines to 3rd grade when she starts which has a much higher homework volume. Mary Ellen was very easy to work with and thoroughly engaged my child during their time together, and I always had a good idea of where they were at after each lesson. Thanks Mary Ellen!
