Every beginning reader should be taught consonants, vowels and their phonics to begin to learn how to pronounce words. I like to combine the two philosophies of phonics and whole language reading. For visual learners whole language reading is very helpful because the memory of words and sight work so closely together for cognition (learning). Audio learners work well with reading aloud and hearing phonics repeated as they are sounding out vowels. Both learners learn with a great deal of repetition.
