I studied at the University of Oregon School of Music as a singer, and have sung in various choirs and opera performances for years. I also play the violin, and have developed my inner ear by practice and tuning the violin, my voice, and other string instruments. With practice, a sense of relative pitch can be developed, especially in a group, with other musicians. In private lessons, I've found, a good technique is to reproduce piano pitches from memory.
