"Tutor in Writing, Grammar, Philosophy, Literature, and Latin"

I am currently a PhD student in Philosophy at the University of St. Thomas. For the past three years I worked as a tutor and tutor coordinator at UST. In that time, I have helped students of various levels earn higher marks in philosophy, writing, and English literature. I typically approach the art of tutoring Socratically; that is, by asking questions fashioned to elicit original thoughts from the student. However, in my experience, I sometimes find it necessary to explain principles and/o... ... More

"Native speaker of French, patient and passionate"

I only tutor in French. I think it's important to put the language in its context, and not just teach a string of words or rules of grammar. I use visuals and interactive techniques to teach the language. The goal of most people who want to learn a language is to learn to communicate on basic things, not to have a lengthy conversation with the locals. I take this into account. I also have experience teaching French to younger kids at the elementary and middle school level (I taught my own ... ... More

Suzanne plans each lesson meticulously to closely match what is taught in the classroom. The familiarity with the subject matter only builds confidence.
Dr. Eileen has been tutoring me for an entire semester. I am a student at Florida State and have been planning a trip to Central America and wanted some one on one tutoring before I went. I'm not very proficient in Spanish, but she breaks it down in manageable chunks. She is very flexible and when I have questions that don't pertain to the lessons I'm taking, and she is always willing to handle anything I ask. She is familiar with some variances in different dialects (Spain Spanish vs. Latin American Spanish), and can usually adjust our lessons to what is pertinent to me. She also does a great job with blending grammar and conversational Spanish. Because I will mostly be speaking Spanish, she adjusted our lessons to focus more on the verbal understanding with some reading recognition. One of the biggest complaints I usually have with instructors involves focusing too much on grammar. I felt she gave a very balanced lesson that included the necessary grammar to speak correctly without over-saturating our lessons with minute details. In addition to our lessons, she also provided me with very useful resources to use on my own time, as well as textbooks and apps to use before and during my travels. I don't really have any complaints about her tutoring style. She has always been flexible with scheduling and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with her this semester. I would highly recommend her if you need assistance with a Spanish class or if you want to learn Spanish without taking any formal classes. She is a very attentive, enthusiastic, and skilled instructor.
