My son enjoys a challenge, but his first grades in PreAP Algebra 2 and Chemistry put him at risk of failing both courses. I selected Dr. Bruce to tutor my son because as a high school algebra and chemistry substitute teacher, Dr. Bruce has full access to current curriculum materials and schedules. When Dr. Bruce began tutoring my son, he first assessed my son’s knowledge of both courses. Dr. Bruce then reviewed critical concepts my son had missed in class. They worked together to ensure my son’s understanding of these foundation concepts before moving on. As Dr. Bruce makes clear in just one of his tutoring sessions, he likes to first take a small piece of the troubled section in algebra or chemistry and then breaks down that section, stressing the importance of each part; which my son found to be very effective to his understanding of the material. My son asked questions of Dr. Bruce which he did not feel comfortable discussing in class. He was able to take his time and work through problems, complete homework, and prepare for test during tutoring. Dr. Bruce was always aware of testing schedules and upcoming curriculum topics. This was very helpful to me, because my son was so focused on trying to keep up; he often missed important pieces of information. Dr. Bruce takes his job as a tutor very seriously. He was always on time, always prepared, finished on time, was flexible when needed, and was straight forward about my son’s progress. When it comes to learning there is no magic, just hard work and effort. With Dr. Bruce’s help, my son can now move on to subjects which accentuate his talents with the proven knowledge that when challenged with subjects difficult for him, he can be successful.

This was our first tutoring session. Silvia and I exchanged questions about ourselves, mostly in Italian. I asked her to repeat many things and she willingly did so with a smile. Because I want to improve my fluency there were many instances that required extra time for me to respond. Sylvia helped when needed, but gave me the time to try to find the words myself. I am very pleased with having Silvia as my tutor and look forward to working with her again.
