8751 ESL Tutors ( English as a second language )
Whether you are looking to improve your English to attain a native skill level, or are just starting out with learning English as a second language, you could benefit from some private ESL tutoring. English is a difficult language to master especially because of the various dialects ad the difficult grammar and syntax rules that are involved. Often students feel as though the textbook English they learn in class is very different from what is spoken around them in the United States. Often ESL tutors can help you to get to grips with these discrepancies through additional ESL lessons and English coaching. Take a look at the tutor profiles below and pick the tutor who will best serve your ESL needs.

I recently decided that I wanted to go back to school to allow me to broaden my future job opportunities. I am originally from Russia and have been in the United States for about fourteen years. While able to carry on an English conversation, when it comes to reading and writing, my skills are somewhat limited. I knew I needed to look for help. After doing some internet searches, I came across WyzAnt. I spent some time reviewing the profiles of the English tutors in my area and decided to email three of them to see if any might be an appropriate fit. After careful consideration, I decided on Christy and couldn’t be more pleased. Christy’s prompt and professional response, especially the fact that she took the time to carefully read the finer points in my rather long email, sealed the deal for me. During our initial consultation, Christy took extensive notes and listened intently to me as I explained exactly what I was looking to accomplish. When I finished, we together worked on a plan of attack. Improving my reading comprehension and speed, along with developing the proper mechanics in my writing were put on top of the list. Also, knowing that I will likely be required to take some form of admissions exam or standardized test in the near future, we have been working on my vocabulary, including roots, prefixes and suffixes. Christy and I have been meeting once a week for ninety minutes since May. She provides me with homework each week, which we go over at the start of our next session before moving on to new material. That review at the beginning of our lesson has also helped to improve my conversational English. Christy is always well prepared and punctual for our lessons. Any necessary communications between lessons have been easily accomplished through email, cell phone and text. Christy is not only knowledgeable and professional in what she does she is also a very compassionate person who is supportive and wants to see me achieve my goals. I highly recommend Christy.

I have over 15 years of experience as a Microsoft Excel user. I am considered an "expert" level user as I have full knowledge in the use of this powerful tool for functions from simple recording of data and basic math functions to hyperlinks, word formulas, subtotaling, multiple sheet references, and linking to data-merge files. I can navigate export/import functions, format pages, and write macros. However, pivot tables and charts are not my specialty. If you are just learning, or want to unlock the power of an amazing tool, I can help. ... More

Hi, I'm Alex! I graduated high school in the top 10% of graduates in my state with a years worth of college credits (thanks AP!). Despite my active role in high school, I chose to take a nontraditional route for my post high plans. After graduation I moved to Denver to serve as a corps member with City Year AmeriCorps, an education nonprofit. As a corps member my primary task was to focus on a small group of students (ages 11 to 17) who were 1 to 4 years behind in reading and writing and get ... ... More

I'm really happy to have Tracy as my TOEFL tutor. She is helping me a lot preparing for my exam. From the first day she knew what my weak areas were and now we are working together to overcome those areas. I recommend Tracy because she is passionate about what she is doing.

"High School Teacher Tutoring English and Writing"

Hi there! My name is Maximilian. I teach English at a Catholic High School, and I have been a tutor for over six years, focusing on helping students learn to write well. I got my start tutoring while attending college in Miami, where I was asked to help fellow students--both ESL and native speakers--improve their writing. Since then, I've tutored and taught Literature, Public Speaking and English. While I can (and do!) teach all aspects of English, my absolute favorite aspect of it to tutor ... ... More

I would highly recommend Darby. I put out a request to help my 8th grader improve his penmanship, which is kind of an obscure request, but she had an organized plan, did detailed analysis, and ultimately made tremendous inroads in helping him. The other part is that my son was quite hesitant about being tutored, but her warm and calm demeanor quickly put him at ease and he ended up actually enjoying the lessons. I would not hesitate to contact Darby again for any tutoring needs in any subject.

"17 Years Teaching Elementary Students"

I feel fortunate to have spent most of my 17 year teaching career teaching kindergarten and first grade. Why? I was able to help hundreds of children learn to read. What an amazing gift to be able to witness and to experience first hand! I have used many reading methods and techniques to teach reading. Again...why? Children are different and the way they learn to read and process information is different. What works for one child may not work for another child. It is my job to find what works best for your child. Is it a phonics based program? Is it a whole language approach? Is it ... More

I had Stephanie read my poems that I was going to submit for a contest, and she pointed out what I did well, and what I needed to improve on. With her help, I was able to correct the flaws and clarify stanzas. I wouldn't have been able to identify those problems without her! She is a great teacher, and anyone needing help with writing would be lucky to have her!
John made the material so much easier to understand just in the first session. My son had already made the appointment for the next tutoring session with no hesitation. John was very patient and easy to work with.
Christina is extremely helpful and very patient. She covers the material at your pace and makes sure you absolutely 100% understand the material.
Gregg was an excellent tutor for Advanced Algebra. Patient, clear, connects with students. We'd definitely use him again. Thanks Gregg.
