I am a veteran teacher of 15 years. Most of my experience is teaching English Language Arts at the 7th grade and above, but I currently work at the elementary level. My specialty is in analyzing American Literature, and teaching comprehension strategies, but I also am skilled at teaching organization and outlining for writing, all grammar concepts, and I have a wealth of general knowledge in science, math and social studies that covers K-8 concepts if you need help in other areas. Susan is a excellent tutor. She is very helpful and very nice. I having been tutoring with her for over a month working on SAT prep and my junior thesis. She has helped me improve my writing by helping me how to organize my thoughts, which now makes it much easier for me to write a paper. Whenever I have a question, I am able to call or email her and she replies instantly.

When I teach.... My first job is to create a learning environment that students enjoy. I love learning something new, so education has always fun for me, except when I was learning nothing. Boredom is painful, so I work hard to avoid it. I don't want to receive it, nor inflict it on others. Once I find out what a student enjoys, what he or she enjoys, whether content or activity or energy, becomes part of our interaction. My second job is to set high expectations for student achievement. I ... ... More

"Not just better grades: Build Skills, Knowledge, Confidence"

I am currently a psychotherapist working with children and families, and passed the Vermont State Licensure exam in Psychology in March, 2012. When tutoring a child with problems of attentional focus and self-control, I find it desirable to engage the child's family in modifying the child's non-academic problems, so that learning may proceed with less difficulty. My first exposure to the behavioral profile that is now known as ADHD was in 1971, at a state hospital in Pennsylvania. I have treated many children who have received diagnoses of ADHD, or who exhibited the behaviors associated w ... More

"Great sense of humor"

I have a very wide range of experiences--farm laborer, carpenter, student, teacher, paralegal, Spanish teacher, ESL teacher, librarian--all of which have taught me that my greatest skills are my sense of humor, and my sympathy and respect for learning of any subject or skill, from stacking wood to appreciating Shakespeare. I am from an upper middle-class background, went to an IVY League school, but have mainly worked with poor and immigrant laboring communities. Because I am poor at... ... More

By far the best tutor I've ever had in general. I am a biology student at university and let's just say organic chemistry is not one of my stronger classes (I'm a 3.8 GPA student). Well, in orgo 1 I barely pulled out a B- and while in the beginning of orgo 2 I was having a huge problem with sn1, sn2, E1, and E2. Then I found Kevin on Wyzant and he has turned me around ten fold. I went from being unsure to answer a question in class to being the one the prof always looks at for an answer. And I went from a 66 on the first exam (class average was a 40) to the highest grade in the class on Exam 2 (I got an 85 but the class avg was a 60), and now my average in the class is an 84. Also I am looking to go into the dental field and take my DAT's to get into dental school and he has been so helpful with getting prepared. I would 100% recommend Kevin to anyone who is struggling in orgo or wants to get into medical or dental school!
We started learning Italian in Florence last fall and wanted to continue to improve. Francesca has been able to customize our lessons and help us improve our conversation and writing skills. We thoroughly enjoy our time every week and are looking forward to more lessons in the months to come.
