Our son is a VERBAL learner and struggles with abstract concepts. Math is his most challenging subject. From their first meeting, Jessie has worked very hard to earn his trust and understand what interests him. She has a gentle and cheerful personality. She has been very responsive to working on the areas we suggest as well as those she has assessed. Jessie even attended a meeting with his teachers at school to make sure her efforts were coordinated with his "team" of teachers and to better understand his learning style. Jessie seems to strike a good balance of making him feel good about what he is learning simply from encouragement and offering occasional rewards like M&Ms (with our permission of course. Chocolate is a big deal around here!). Jessie is always on time, flexible when there is a conflict, and patient and persistent when he is having trouble focusing. We appreciate her contribution to his growth. The biggest compliment I can give is that our son doesn't complain on the days when she comes for tutoring! Jessie has been successful at making his most challenging subject FUN instead of a CHORE, which is really every parent's goal in helping their child learn. I have no complaints and really can't say enough good about her. Thanks Jessie!

"Energetic math tutor for all ages!"

I worked as a special education paraprofessional for two years at an elementary school. I spent my days working with special needs students that had trouble focusing due to their ADD. I learned several techniques to use in trainings, as well as working with their classroom teachers. The students just need someone with patience, and also someone who can help them work through their hardships. ... More

"Experienced math and physics tutor with PhD"

Hi, I'm Bjorn, a recent PhD in mathematics. I have extensive (5+ years) experience tutoring in both mathematics and physics at the high school and university levels. Unlike most tutors, I only take on students in subjects that are closely related to my areas of academic specialization and experience. I hold a PhD in mathematics. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in mathematics. I have taught both at the university level in large undergraduate lectures and tutored students 1 on 1. Through this... ... More

"Native German and ESL Tutor with a Master's degree in Education"

I am a native German speaker with a Masters Degree in Education. I have many years of teaching experience in German and ESL. I am a skilled and fun German tutor. In my opinion, being a native speaker is a minimum requirement for a good German tutor. However, I also believe that just being a native speaker does not mean you are also a good teacher. For that, you need teaching skills. I offer both, as I also have a Master's degree in Education. Furthermore, I have many years of hands-on e... ... More

"Building academic confidence and positive outlook on learning."

Hello! My name is Jen. I first discovered my love of tutoring while studying at Luther College. There, I was recruited to be a peer tutor, and after my first session, I knew that helping students was what I wanted to do with my life. After teaching in public schools for six years and tutoring students whenever I could find time, I decided to start my own education business to help individual students tackle any academic hurdle in front of them with patience, perseverance, and positivity. Alt... ... More

Great tutor, always a good time, always learn a lot!!! He is extremely prepared and knows his stuff very well.
My son, while a gifted student and getting As on tests, was bringing home mediocre grades (B's and C's) in school because he'd do and lose his homework and classwork, or decide not to do it at all! He is bored by the repetition and busy work in the gifted classes and would be positively climbing the walls if he gets removed from the the advanced/gifted classes. I'd spent 3 quarters riding him about organization and turning things in, to no avail. He failed his favorite subject for the 3rd nine weeks. That's when I called Christa. Christa came in and asked my son to pour his bookbags, notebooks, etc out on the very large dining room table. It completely swallowed the dining room at first. With her help, HE (note HE!!!!) organized his notebooks and suddenly knew where things were. There was no drama, he was able to turn in assignments on time afterwards and while he approached the tutoring with a less than open attitude, he saw the benefit and is willing to work with it. She sent us shopping for a few more section dividers and some hole reinforcements for the things that had gotten out of control. With a plan of continuing contact with his teachers, I feel his 9 weeks grade will actually reflect his abilities and keep him academically eligible to tryout for sports, marching band and stay in the gifted program, which he needs for his personal growth.
