Rob is not a high-quality tutor. You will not feel like a valued customer. We met on the same day, same time each week for many weeks and he consistently showed up late without apology. One week he never showed up, claiming he’d forgotten to schedule me in! He would consistently check the clock, never going a minute past our scheduled time.
I was not a priority. He was always unprepared to our lessons, not even bringing a pencil or paper. I supplied the test workbook, but he never brought in supplementary materials for areas I had clearly struggled in. He seemed more focused on moving through the text, rather than ensuring I had a clear understanding. During our meetings, I felt he was annoyed with the questions I asked about the material, as he would sigh and have an annoyed tone as he answered my question as if I should have already known.
Rob is not involved. He would spend a lot of time on his cell phone, as I struggled on my own to complete questions. If I asked a question, I had to wait, as he would finish on his cell phone first, then attend to me.
He has poor teaching and communication skills. He has a high level of education in math and obviously, zero experience in teaching methods, this is highly evident through his tutoring sessions. He struggled to explain the material to me at a level I could understand. Many times, he referred to many math terms and concepts I did not know and was frustrated when I asked for a different explanation. His explanations were confusing and filled with many long pauses that I could not follow.
He was insulting to my intelligence. I contacted him to prepare me for the GRE: Math. He took it upon himself to explain that I would never have a deep conceptual understanding of math. He constantly inferred that I would not be a sufficient elementary mathematics teacher. I believe this was crossing the line. Not only does the GRE have nothing to do with my teaching certification, as a tutor who should be building their students’ confidence, he did the opposite.
If you are strictly looking for a tutor with a knowledge of math, like a dictionary, without any guidance, support, or ability to explain the material then Rob is your top pick. If you are looking for the full tutoring experience, complete with a prepared and engaged educator with teaching skills, I highly suggest you look elsewhere.
