Happy New Year – Lets start it off by taking steps to becoming more successful

Successful TutorThe following steps will help a tutor take the students right from the beginning till the end of a course. The task of the tutor is not easy and requires hard work on an individual level so that they can record the progress. Following the steps will help you to build a strong relationship with the tutee which is vital to bring out the most from the studying sessions.

STEP 1- To build a comfortable study environment is the responsibility of the tutor. Always greet and welcome your student, talk to them and let them speak. Be a good listener.

STEP 2- Identify the subjects and content that needs most attention. What is the problem faced by the student? What sort of help the students need? Should the course content start from beginning to let student have a solid grip on the subject? Always identify the problem first and divide the time and course of study into parts, giving more time to the deficiency and less to the things which have better understanding.

STEP 3- Use study tips and problem solving methodology for teaching. Always focus on developing quick revision tips that students should note and keep in hand all time. Some students are not good at memorizing theoretical parts; help them with graphics and flow charts. Give them examples you followed during your study, guide them to develop short memorizing techniques.

STEP 4-Try to engage the student most of the time during lectures. Base your tutoring techniques on short intervals followed by questioning and discussions. Deliver explanations using different learning styles. Ask students to look for the answers during lectures and ask them to complete the task of answering all questions.

STEP 5-Tackle problems directly. The key to learn is hands-on practice. Always make students read out loud and summarize work. Ask questions to check their understanding.

STEP 6- Build their confidence in learning and answering. Praise them if they are prompt in correct replies and have learned well.

STEP 7- Always make sure to conduct a session at the level which students can understand. Be a student, not the teacher. Make them to take notes and summarize the session at the end of each class.

STEP 8- Work in advance, plan the next session. Ask them to skim through the chapter which will be taught the next day and revise the present lecture in present date. Be punctual to start on time and finish before time and give enough time for conclusion, and make sure to answer all the queries.

STEP 9- Keep an updated record of exams and assignments. Ensure that you prepare students for the exams way before the deadlines. Cover the entire syllabus in the first cycle of the session and conduct at least two cycles of revision.

STEP 10- Don’t do the home assignments, it’s for the students, not for the teachers. Guide them and help them how to do home assignments, leave the rest on them unless they are not up to the mark.

STEP 11- Rejoice at their success. Be positive and encouraging. Point the progress in front of their parents and ask the parents to appreciate their ward. Don’t overburden them; they should also have a study-free period.
