Collaborative Efforts

The Sleep Project Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals, NA

In 2005, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. approached us after seeing our Sleep, Health and Aging report, the product of a workshop we organized in partnership with Canyon Ranch Resorts. The report addressed sleeping disorders in people age 50 and over -- an important and often ignored challenge to older adults' overall health.

Supported by a generous grant from Takeda, we set out to bring greater insight and attention to this public health issue by organizing a national survey and scientific consensus conference: Sleep and Healthy Aging. The initiative garnered coverage around the country, including an appearance by Dr. Robert N. Butler, our President & CEO, on CBS' The Early Show.

Now, with continued sponsorship support from Takeda, and following a second conference entitled Sleep and Chronic Disease in Older People, we have created the National Coalition for Sleep Disorders in Older People (S-DOP). This coalition of aging, geriatric, and sleep organizations will work to develop, endorse, and disseminate evidence-based sleep guidelines.

The coalition includes more than thirteen leading national organizations, including the National Sleep Foundation, the Gerontological Society of America, and the American Geriatric Society. The guidelines are expected to be published in early 2008.

Together with MetLife, Inc., we co-hosted the 2006 symposium Envisioning the Future. Hundreds of business leaders and policy experts gathered in Washington D.C. to address issues related to retirement financing, long-term care, and the aging workforce.

A highlight of the event was our President & CEO Dr. Robert N. Butler's riveting presentation: The Global Perspective on Longevity: From Biology to the Global Economy. Dr. Butler drew on his vast experience as a physician, gerontologist, and Pulitzer-prize-winning author to discuss:

  • the biological factors contributing to length of life
  • the link between health and wealth
  • the broader impacts of the global economy
