Clinical Education ServiceThe world is aging rapidly. By 2050, there will be 2 billion people in the world over 60 years old, 80% of them in the developing world. 35% of Europe will be over 60. But very few aging societies are preparing for this change with educational programs in geriatric medicine and gerontology for health professionals. Assisting With Global & Community Health Care Needs
To help remedy this pressing situation, the Clinical Education Consultation Service of the ILC-USA (CECS) offers collaborative assistance to governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, community hospitals and clinics, and community agencies in establishing new clinical, educational, and policy approaches to their demographic trends and health care needs for older adults. Project and teaching consultations have thus far involved the CECS in South Africa, Singapore, Malta, Mexico, Russia, Bulgaria and China. The founder and director of the CECS is Harrison G. Bloom, M.D., former Vice-Chairman for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development at the Mount Sinai-New York University Medical Center in New York. Consultants are members of the ILC-USA professional staff and faculty of Mt. Sinai Department of Geriatrics and other leading geriatrics and gerontology centers. Each consultation is carefully planned to meet the individual needs of the recipient institution. Consultations may include: - assessment of community or institutional clinical resources for care of the older population, and consultation regarding a spectrum of care, including in-hospital care, outpatient care, home care, institutional and noninstitutional long term care
- consultations regarding the incorporation of geriatric medicine and gerontology curriculum into the training of medical students, residents in internal medicine and family medicine, nursing students, and faculty and fellows in the medical and surgical subspecialties
- interactive symposia on geriatric clinical syndromes
- application of principles of evidence-based medicine to curriculum development and delivery of clinical care
- planning and implementing a geriatric fellowship training program
- topics in geriatric nursing
- topics in geriatric psychiatry
- consultation with national or international organizations, businesses, or corporations wishing to implement and support programs for their older employees and/or retirees. Such programs would likely focus upon appropriate physical activity, nutrition, screening and preventive health measures, and advance directives
- formal presentations to clinical faculty, residents in training, medical and other health professional students
- clinical inpatient and/or outpatient rounds
