I am a 2007 graduate of Colby College in Maine, where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in History and in German Studies. After graduating, I spent an academic year in Austria as an English Language Teaching Assistant, and have experience tutoring English, German, and history. My areas of expertise and interest are German, European history, geography, reading, writing, and English. I have two years of experience as a college admissions counselor, and am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in mode...
I have worked with several students, ranging in age from children to adults, who are either native speakers of English, or for whom English is a second language. In addition to tutoring several students individually in English (reading, writing, and speaking), I worked in a classroom setting teaching English while a Language Assistant in Austria.
Currently I am pursuing my PhD in modern European history, with a focus on the WWII period. In addition to my years of history coursework as both an undergraduate and graduate student, I am a Teaching Assistant in my current history department. Courses I have assisted professors with, and taught lecture or discussion components in, include a survey of modern European history (French Revolution to present), the history of Nazi Germany, Europe 1914-45, and the social and intellectual history of Europe. I regularly hold office hours at Stony Brook to assist students enrolled in these courses.
I began formal study of the German language in January 2004. I have taken advanced German language and literature courses, as well as history courses in German. While completing my Bachelor of Arts in History and German Studies, I spent seven months studying in southwest Germany, where I took seminars taught entirely in German. Upon returning to the United States, I tutored a student for several months in German conversation practice. After graduation, I lived in Austria for an academic year teaching English to Austrian students. I also traveled to Germany during summer 2012 for a visit, and in summer 2013 for an academic seminar. My particular strengths include German conversation and reading, and familiarity with German and Austrian culture.
While working for two years as a college admissions counselor, one of my major duties was to serve as proofreader/copy editor for outgoing mass communications and published admissions materials. I also have extensive writing and editing experience as a student of history. Currently, as a teaching assistant, I read and grade student essays regularly, and provide constructive feedback in terms of content, argument, grammar, and spelling.
Through working with undergraduate students and grading essays, I have experience in editing for content, style, and grammar. I have also helped individuals in the editing and revision process for college application essays, academic papers, blog posts, and correspondence. My own writing experience includes academic essays and short articles on a variety of subjects.
