I am certified in middle and high school math, and have over 12 years' experience in the classroom. My greatest satisfaction comes from helping an individual gain an understanding of math concepts. I prefer to think of myself as someone who teaches people about math rather than as a math teacher.
My first certification (from Ohio State) was in elementary education. I have four plus years classroom experience in middle school English and Math. I have worked in first, second, third and fourth grade classrooms as a volunteer. In addition, I have worked with several older students learning how to read better. Reading is the most important academic skill a person can have.
As a high school teacher, I mentored a group of students each semester. These students always included several seniors taking a government course. I routinely helped these students with study skills, research, and content knowledge. In addition, my certification in elementary education qualifies me to teach social studies for grades one through eight.
Study skills involve organization, a regular schedule, and the use of memorization and memory aids. In my classroom, I have routinely used rhythmic repetition to help students memorize and recall crucial information. Often, the way information is organized is a great help toward making sense of the information, which then becomes easier to remember. In addition, setting aside time every day to practice recitation of information, read over notes, and regroup or reorganize information will assist in making meaning and sense out of the subject being studied.
Before my teaching career began, I had a career in engineering. One of my most critical job functions was writing user guides and reports. As a teacher, I also have lots of experience in writing clear and concise instructional material. I have written lesson plans, procedures to facilitate learning, guided notes, process guides, analyses of procedures and processes, and even newspaper articles.
